Matchday 3: Saarbrücken host Dortmund – Top clash in Bremen
Matchday 3 of the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) promises pure excitement: In Saarbrücken, Borussia Dortmund comes calling, while league leaders Werder Bremen welcome fellow unbeaten side TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt in the weekend’s top clash. Meanwhile, Fulda, Ochsenhausen, and Düsseldorf are under pressure after shaky starts, while Mühlhausen aim to extend their winning streak. All matches will be streamed live on Dyn.
1. FC Saarbrücken TT – Borussia Dortmund
The round begins with Saarbrücken facing Borussia Dortmund. Saarbrücken’s season so far has revolved around their high-profile newcomer, Olympic champion Fan Zhendong, currently the most talked-about player in the league. His disastrous Bundesliga debut against Bergneustadt saw him suffer two defeats – and his team lose the tie. A week later came redemption, with Fan winning twice in a 3-1 victory away to Bad Königshofen. Dortmund travel on the back of a bitter 2–3 home defeat to Fulda, decided only in the decisive doubles and then in the fifth set. “We had expected our chances, and there was more in it for us – just a handful of points made the difference,” said BVB coach Evgeny Fadeev. Both sides thus enter with an even record of one win and one loss.
TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen – TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau
For TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen, Matchday 3 already carries the feel of a must-win. After two opening losses, the reigning champions are desperate to collect their first points at home against Grenzau. “We want to get our first points in front of our fans and start winning,” emphasized coach Bogdan Pugna. The key could be top player Shunsuke Togami, who might make his season debut after visa issues and international duties. Grenzau coach Markus Ströher countered: “Ochsenhausen rely heavily on young talents with bright futures but without much experience at this level yet. That gives us chances, though we know how tough it is here.” Grenzau also arrive boosted by a 3–0 German Cup win over TTC Indeland Jülich, which booked them a spot in the quarterfinals.
TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell – TSV Bad Königshofen
Fulda celebrated a dramatic away win in Dortmund last time out: Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Fanbo Meng clinched the 3–2 in the doubles decider to secure the team’s first points of the season. Now they return home to face TSV Bad Königshofen, still searching for their first victory after two defeats. Their home opener against Saarbrücken was a spectacle in front of nearly 1,000 fans at the Shakehands Arena, but ended 1–3. Key men for the hosts remain Daniel Habesohn, who earned their lone point, and Andre Bertelsmeier, who delivered an impressive performance against superstar Fan Zhendong.
ASC Grünwettersbach – Borussia Düsseldorf
It’s not just about results at ASC Grünwettersbach: after parting ways with coach Achim Krämer, the club announced the arrival of Kilian Ort, who will officially take charge after this match. Until then, Ricardo Walther will step into the box one last time as player-coach. His tenure began with a commanding 3–0 win in Bad Homburg, but record champions Borussia Düsseldorf will provide a sterner test. The Rhine club are eager to bounce back after a shock 0–3 home defeat to Bremen and regain their footing.
SV Werder Bremen – TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt
The standings surprisingly show Werder Bremen on top after two matchdays. Following a narrow 3–2 win in Bad Homburg, they pulled off their first victory over record champions Düsseldorf in twelve years with a 3–0 sweep. “First place is a nice snapshot, but after two matchdays the table means very little,” said team manager Sascha Greber. Next up is a true top clash against Bergneustadt, who started with wins over Saarbrücken and Ochsenhausen. Star man Benedikt Duda and Romain Ruiz were the architects of their upset against Fan Zhendong, and confidence is sky-high. “The match against Bergneustadt is a real test for us; both teams have built up a lot of belief,” said Werder coach Cristian Tamas.
Post SV Mühlhausen – TTC OE Clarity Bad Homburg
Post SV Mühlhausen are enjoying a dream start, with five straight wins across all competitions: two in the league plus three in the Champions League. That confidence will be on display when they host Bad Homburg. The visitors lost narrowly in Bremen and more clearly to Grünwettersbach, and are still waiting for their first points. New signing Jo Yokotani has shown flashes of promise but is yet to deliver a win. Coach Helmut Hampl, however, preaches patience with his young side: “We’ve faced strong opponents and proved we can compete – now it’s about converting the tight matches into victories.”
